(Photo Gallery) U.S. Neurologist Shares Poems Healing PTSD


On June 26, Dr. Frederick Foote, a poet, neurologist, retired U.S. Navy physician and captain, visited Busan under the auspices of Embassy Seoul and Consulate Busan.  Dr Foote, winner of the 2015 Gold Medal for Poetry, Military Writers Society of America, shared his poems and his medical experiences of using poetry and other arts for treating post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) during a radio talk show appearance in Busan, an interview with Busan Daily News, and a lecture at Pukyong National University (PKNU).  At PKNU, he spoke on “Healing Veterans Through the Arts and Nature” to about 40 students, faculty, and other invited guests.  Dr. Foote recited the poems themed around the war-wounded from his book “Medic Against Bomb: A Doctor’s Poetry of War,” which was a finalist in the 2014 USA Best Book Awards for Poetry.  Dr. Foote also introduced his work at Walter Reed National Military Medical Center, Washington, D.C., including holistic medicine which aims to heal veterans beset with brain injury and PTSD through art and nature.  The audience was rapt, and a lively Q & A session ensued.
