November 13, 2017 – Shortly after Team USA’s Olympic speed skating team arrived in Korea to attend the ISU Short Track Speed Skating World Cup, they visited Goyang city for a friendly training session with the Goyang Penguins, a team of developmentally disabled short track skaters. After demonstrating some on-the-ground exercises like “dry skating,” Team USA athletes and the Penguins coupled up and raced around the rink. Unfortunately, the Olympians lost all five 500-meter match-ups against the Penguins but, luckily, press coverage was forgiving. Team USA athletes, including three-time Olympic medalist J.R. Celski, Korean-born Thomas Hong, and Team USA’s ace Jessica Kooreman, said that they were honored and inspired to be on the ice with some of the best Special Olympic athletes.
