Alert: Nationwide Civil Defense Drill on August 23, 2023
Location: Republic of Korea
Event: The Republic of Korea (ROK) government will carry out a nationwide civil defense drill on August 23, 2023, at 14:00 (2:00pm) local time. The scheduled exercise will begin with an air-raid warning at 14:00 (2:00pm) and end with a lifting siren at 14:20 (2:20pm). Following the air-raid warning, Korean authorities will restrict the movement of residents and the operation of vehicles for approximately 15 minutes. While this exercise is not an actual emergency, please cooperate with all instructions from Korean authorities.
ACTIONS TO TAKE:
- If directed by authorities, drivers should park or pull over.
- If directed by authorities, pedestrians should move to the nearest safe-haven or underground shelter. When arriving at a shelter, follow the instructions of emergency staff.
- Monitor local media, television, and radio for updates.
- Ensure your information is updated with the U.S. Embassy at https://step.state.gov.
- If you know of any U.S. Citizens that DID NOT receive this message, please advise them to enroll in the Smart Traveler Enrollment Program (STEP).
